Western Cape learners shine at National Schools Moot Court

The Paul Roos team was one of four teams that represented the Western Cape in the national leg of the competition. The other teams were from Hermanus High School, Zwelethemba High and Vredenburg High School.

Lisa Mcinjana and Marli Snyman of Hermanus High School won an award for the best respondent essay.

The annual competition was a collaboration between the Department of Basic Education (DBE), the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DoJ&CD) and the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC).

This year’s competition started with Grade 11 learners writing an essay on a pre-determined human rights issue. Top performers then reached a provincial round which consisted of argumentation around a human rights issue in a simulated court setting.

The SAHRC hosted the final round of the competition from Wednesday, 06 October to Sunday, 10 October 2021.

This year’s NSMCC was held virtually with 36 teams from across South Africa being able to participate from anywhere in the country. Members of the public and the media could view the competition online.

The top two teams presented their oral arguments virtually to Constitutional Court judges during the grand finale.
