Western Cape strengthens community action against GBVF and human trafficking in Matzikama
The second day of the four-day Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) and Human Trafficking Awareness Programme is underway today in Vredendal, Matzikama Municipality, following a successful first day of community engagement that brought together government departments, community leaders, civil society organisations, law enforcement agencies and residents to raise awareness and strengthen community action against these crimes.
Hosted by the Western Cape Department of Local Government in partnership with key stakeholders, the programme runs from 13 to 16 July 2026. It aims to educate communities about the dangers of gender-based violence, femicide and human trafficking while encouraging greater collaboration to protect vulnerable people and build safer communities.
The opening day featured awareness sessions focusing on recognising the signs of gender-based violence and human trafficking, understanding the support services available to victims and survivors, and highlighting the importance of reporting incidents. Community members actively participated in discussions, asked questions and engaged with officials and service providers on the challenges facing their communities.
The programme forms part of the Western Cape Government's ongoing commitment to building resilient, safe and informed communities through prevention, education and coordinated service delivery. By bringing services directly to communities, residents can access information, engage with experts and learn about the resources available to victims and survivors.
Over the remaining days, the programme will continue with educational sessions, community dialogues and awareness activities designed to empower residents with knowledge and practical information. A key highlight will be the Men's Conference, which will encourage men and boys to become positive role models, challenge harmful social norms and play an active role in preventing gender-based violence and protecting women and children.
Speaking on the importance of the initiative, Department of Local Government official Ms Prudence Ramnath said, "Gender-based violence and human trafficking continue to have devastating consequences for individuals, families and communities. Addressing these challenges requires all sectors of society to work together. Through programmes like this, we are empowering communities with knowledge, strengthening partnerships and encouraging every resident to play a role in preventing violence and protecting those most at risk."
The Department remains committed to working with municipalities, government departments, law enforcement agencies, non-governmental organisations and community stakeholders to ensure that awareness is translated into meaningful action that makes communities safer.
The four-day programme concludes on 16 July 2026 with continued stakeholder engagement and a renewed commitment to strengthening partnerships in the fight against gender-based violence, femicide and human trafficking.
