Provincial IDP Managers' Forum strengthens municipal planning and supports vulnerable children

The Western Cape Department of Local Government, through its Integrated Development Planning (IDP) Directorate, hosted the Provincial IDP Managers' Forum on 11 and 12 June 2026 at the Cape Winelands District Municipality. The two day forum brought together municipal IDP managers, officials, and sector representatives from across the province to strengthen integrated development planning and improve coordination between all spheres of government.

The Provincial IDP Managers' Forum is an important platform that enables municipalities to work together, share knowledge, and improve the quality of Integrated Development Plans. As the primary strategic planning tool for municipalities, the IDP guides development, service delivery, infrastructure investment, and long-term growth in communities. Through regular engagement, the Forum helps municipalities prepare IDPs that are legally compliant, strategically aligned, and responsive to the needs of residents.

The forum also provides an opportunity for municipalities to exchange ideas, share best practices, build capacity, and explore innovative approaches to planning while reducing duplication of efforts. It strengthens alignment between national, provincial, and local government priorities and provides a platform for municipalities to raise challenges and identify practical solutions that can be escalated through Intergovernmental Relations structures. This collaborative approach ensures that municipal experiences help shape provincial and national planning, ultimately leading to better coordinated and more effective service delivery.

While the Forum is focused on improving planning and governance, it has also become known for its commitment to giving back to communities. Since 2016, members have embraced the Spirit of Giving initiative, a voluntary programme that supports vulnerable groups across the Western Cape and demonstrates that development extends beyond policies and plans.

This year, the Forum partnered with the Cape Care Fund to support the ASD Sean Kelly Centre in Worcester, which provides specialised daycare services to sensory multi disabled children in the Breede Valley. Through a collective donation of R10 000, Forum members reaffirmed their commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of vulnerable children and their families.

The Provincial IDP Managers' Forum continues to demonstrate that strong partnerships, collaboration, and shared learning are essential to building capable municipalities and improving the lives of residents across the Western Cape. By combining effective planning with compassion and social responsibility, the Forum is helping to build communities that are not only better planned but also more inclusive, caring, and resilient.
