The Nelson Mandela International Day, affectionately known as Mandela Day, is an annual event aimed at honoring and celebrating the legacy of Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first democratically elected President.
It is celebrated each year on his birthday, i.e.. While it is not recognized as an official public holiday, the Nelson Mandela Day is often characterized by millions of people across the globe spending at least 67 minutes of their time doing something good for others and those around them consistent with the values espoused by this global icon during his lifetime.
In response to the above, the Department of Local Government out rolled-out a citizen interface programme in Nelspoort from 19 – 21 June 2023. This initiative emanated from the Premier’s State of the Province on 23 February 2023 where he committed his government to being more "citizens obsessed" in the next few years.
Stakeholders from various Departments across the three spheres of government ranging from Community Based Organizations, the private sector and citizens joined hands as part of an ongoing approach to uplift the Community of Nelspoort and other marginalized communities in the Central Karoo.
The theme was about creating an enabling environment in line with the Western Cape Government’s vision of working ‘’For You”,’’ to facilitate change in the deep rural communities of the Western Cape.
