Department of Local Government convened Municipal Infrastructure Bi-Annual Forum in Overstrand to advance innovation and resilient service delivery

On Thursday, 23 April 2026, the Western Cape Department of Local Government hosted the Municipal Infrastructure Bi-Annual Infrastructure Forum at the Hermanus Municipal Auditorium in Overstrand Municipality, bringing together infrastructure practitioners, municipal leaders and sector partners to strengthen collaboration and advance improved infrastructure delivery.

The Forum served as a strategic platform for engagement on emerging challenges, innovation and practical solutions shaping municipal infrastructure development and sustainable service delivery across the province.

This year’s programme placed strong emphasis on equity in service provision, infrastructure resilience, innovation, financing and sustainable municipal solutions, with discussions and presentations covering a range of topical issues, including:

  • Clarity, Equity and Dignified Living through the Basket of Services Study, which explored approaches to equitable and dignified access to municipal services;
  • The Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) Framework, which unpacked policy and implementation considerations supporting infrastructure investment;
  • The Western Cape Anti-Vandalism Strategy, which highlighted collaborative responses to protecting critical public infrastructure;
  • Municipal Innovation in Energy Security, where Hessequa Municipality showcased its solar energy initiatives;
  • Alternative Municipal Financing, which focused on innovative approaches to funding infrastructure development; and
  • Water Efficient Sanitation Solutions, where the City of Cape Town shared practical implementation lessons.

Through robust dialogue and shared learning, participants reflected on current challenges, showcased innovative responses and strengthened alignment on priorities for advancing sustainable infrastructure delivery. The engagements reinforced the shared responsibility of all stakeholders to accelerate service delivery and improve the quality of life for communities across the Western Cape.
