Earlier today, the Provincial Minister of Infrastructure Tertuis Simmers was joined by the Executive Mayor of Cape Town Geordin Hill-Lewis and the National Minister of Human Settlements to launch the 204 units Social Housing project.

Construction of the R95.9 million project commenced in November 2021 and completed in March 2023. This is another project that the Western Cape Department of Infrastructure (WCDOI) has implemented within record time. The project is in Maitland which is within 10 km from the Central Business District and connected to the Metro’s transport network. Similarly, to all other projects undertaken by WCDOI. It created economic opportunities for local jobseekers and Small Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) with 100 jobs. This will benefit those with a household income of between R1 850 – R22 000 per month.

The beneficiary allocations are as follows:

  • 121 of the 204 units will be allocated to the primary beneficiaries earning between R 1 850 and R 6 700 per month.
  • 83 units are for the secondary target market of people earning between R 6 701 and R22 000 per month.

The project is part of a bigger precinct development called Maitland Metro which will deliver more than 1 200 new units over the next 8 years.

Madulammoho Housing Association is the turnkey development partner in the development of 204 social housing residential units and a further 9 units as part of training facilities on the site.

Ms. Merlene Malan an elderly beneficiary said: “I am happy that I was able to relocate to this project as I will be closer to the hospital, as I recently underwent a medical procedure. Public transport is at my doorstep and will help me commute with ease.”

Provincial Minister Simmers said: “It is great to note that 204 beneficiaries will now not only live closer to their places of work but can also be assured of safety and well-being as indicated by one of the beneficiaries. Building this project within budget as well as ahead of schedule means that multiple families will benefit from the department's efficiency.”

Another beneficiary who relocated from Philippi East Ms. Nonqaba Bikauri expressed her excitement: “I am very happy to have been accommodated here, as it is 10 minutes away from my work. I am at peace knowing that I no longer have to live in of crime as this facility is highly secured.”

The Maitland Mews building is fitted with solar PV panels to feed all geysers to reduce electricity consumption. Another initiative of the Western Cape Government of mitigating the electricity crisis.

“This becomes the fifth social housing project completed within the last 3 years by our department. Directly speaking to our intention on making affordable housing opportunities available to all citizens" concluded Minister Simmers.
