Individual Housing Subsidy applications now open

04 April 2024

Applications for the Department of Infrastructure (DOI) Individual Housing Subsidy opened on 1 April and prospective homeowners are invited to take advantage of this exciting opportunity.

This subsidy is available to low-income applicants wanting to buy residential property for the first time. Once approved, Individual Housing Subsidy recipients may use their subsidy to:

  1. buy an existing house;
  2. buy a house off plan;
  3. use the subsidy to complete construction on a partially built house, provided the house has not previously been subsidised; or
  4.  applicants who already have a serviced site registered into their name and are on the database for the minimum of 3 years or more may also apply

Because there is a limited budget, assistance is provided on a first come-first served basis.

“We saw citizens waiting outside our offices from as early as 5:30am on the first day. These citizens wanted to apply for the subsidy or merely wanted to drop off completed subsidy applications,” said Nathan Adriaanse, head of DOI Public Information and Stakeholder Relations in the Human Settlements branch.

“About 536 citizens have already made enquiries around the subsidy programme.”

Among other qualification criteria, you must have been registered on the housing demand database at your nearest municipality for at least 10 years if you live in the City of Cape Town, and 5 years if you live in other parts of the Western Cape.

Enquiries for the Individual Housing Subsidy can be made at 27 Wale Street, Cape Town. Applicants can also call the helpdesk on 021 483 6488/ 0611/ 3112/ 0623/2060 or email human.settlements@westerncape.gov.za.
