The Open House is a FREE public art engagement space that welcomes all forms of music, comedy, theatre, exhibitions, art, and play in a bustling, busy location within the City of Cape Town.

Located on the corner of Long and Dorp streets in Cape Town, Open House is open to all citizens to make use of for any form of expression. The public art piece which stands 10.5 metres tall is painted bright red and is hard to miss.

The Open House serves to celebrate our democracy and is a tribute to the men and women who fought for freedom, dignity and a better South Africa, in the pursuit of promoting Open and free spaces for all. The Public Art piece was designed by Jacques Coetzer, and was the winning concept in the Western Cape Government’s Public Art Competition , as part of the World Design Capital programme in 2014. The Public Art Competition invited artists to submit their design proposals for an artwork installation that will be placed on a permanent display outside a busy pedestrian route on the corner of Long and Dorp Street. Artists were requested to integrate the theme ‘’20 years of Freedom and Democracy’’ incorporating the World Design Capital 2014 ‘’Live Design, Transform Life’’ into their proposed designs.

The Open House is a public engagement platform free to use by all citizens. In order for citizens to understand the process, we have provided you with a step by step guide on how to use the space.

This includes all steps, from completing the booking form, and the assisted process from the Events team at the Western Cape Government to ensure your event at the Open House is an absolute success.

There are also some external stakeholders that needs to be taken into account, such as the Mosque located opposite the Open House and Safety partnerships with the Central Improvement District. The Standard Operating Procedure ‘s aim is to provide a clear explanation of steps taken to make your event as amazing as possible.
