Minister Anroux Marais' speech at Denis Goldberg House of Hope Agreement
Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais
Hout Bay Museum Signing Agreement with Denis Goldberg for House of Hope
2 October 2018
It is indeed a great privilege to be a part of this significant signing of the Co-operative Agreement between the Hout Bay Museum and the Denis Goldberg Legacy Foundation Trust this evening.
I am especially delighted to partner with the great Denis Goldberg as he actively worked towards the liberation of South Africa and is a well-known anti-apartheid and human rights activist. He is one of only two surviving Rivonia Trialists. He was arrested in 1963 and sentenced together with Nelson Mandela and other anti-apartheid leaders to life imprisonment. He was imprisoned for 22 years until he was released in 1985.
There is no doubt in my mind that the Hout Bay Museum and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport as a whole is grateful for this opportunity to work with the Denis Goldberg Legacy Foundation Trust because I surely am.
We look forward to collaboratively building the House of Hope, which will serve as a new Arts and Culture education and training Centre in Hout Bay to empower and uplift the community and its surroundings through the arts.
I thank each and every individual who had a hand in the establishment of this very significant partnership officiated today. I remember as Victor Pinchuk once said, “Art, freedom and creativity will change society faster than politics”, and considering the national political climate that we currently find ourselves in, we are in urgent need of positive change especially in our most vulnerable communities.
I thank you.
