New sports facilities inaugurated in Witzenberg municipality

The Witzenberg municipality celebrated a significant milestone for local sport yesterday, 19 March 2025, with the inauguration of two newly upgraded sports facilities, showcasing what can be achieved when the Western Cape Government, private sector, and communities work together.

Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie, officially unveiled the upgraded floodlights at Witzenville Sportsfield in Tulbagh and the newly refurbished multi-purpose courts in Prince Alfred Hamlet. These projects, made possible through a partnership between the provincial Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) and Witzenberg Municipality, align with the National Sport and Recreation Plan’s (NSRP) goal of building an active, healthy and winning nation.

The Witzenville Sportsfield upgrade included the installation of modern LED floodlights. This improvement allows local rugby and football clubs to train and compete in the evenings, expanding access to sport and encouraging greater participation at all levels.

In Prince Alfred Hamlet, the newly refurbished tennis and netball courts provide improved playing conditions for young athletes and sports clubs. These courts will serve as a hub for grassroots sports development, offering more opportunities for aspiring players to develop their skills and compete at higher levels.

Minister Mackenzie emphasised the importance of taking ownership of these facilities, urging local communities to maintain and maximise their use. “Sport is a powerful tool for youth development and social cohesion. These upgrades are not just about infrastructure but about creating opportunities, strengthening communities, and investing in the future of our young athletes,” he said.

The Witzenberg municipality is home to a vibrant sporting community, and these investments reaffirm the commitment of all stakeholders to fostering talent, promoting healthy lifestyles, and ensuring that quality sporting infrastructure is accessible to all.
