Minister Ricardo Mackenzie encourages runners ahead of the Two Oceans Marathon weekend

The Western Cape is proud to welcome thousands of athletes and spectators to one of the most iconic races in the world – the Two Oceans Marathon – taking place this weekend, 5 and 6 April 2025.

Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie, who will himself be competing in the 21km race on Sunday, said: “This is more than just a race – it's a celebration of determination, health, unity, and peace. With 17 000 runners in the Half Marathon and 11 000 in the Ultra, we are thrilled to see this level of participation and spirit,” said Minister Mackenzie.

This year’s event carries special significance, as 6 April marks International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, as declared by UNESCO – commemorating the opening of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896.

“It is significant that the Two Oceans Marathon aligns with this global moment, a powerful reminder that sport brings people together and builds communities,” the Minister added.

The Two Oceans Marathon is not only a premier athletic event but also a key contributor to the Western Cape’s economy. Thousands of families have travelled to Cape Town – many turning the race into a school holiday getaway. With every 50 tourists to the Western Cape helping create one job, events like these are vital for job creation and economic growth.

“We are committed to keeping the Western Cape the preferred destination for arts, culture, sport, and recreation. This marathon showcases the best of our province – our natural beauty, our vibrant communities, and our can-do attitude,” said Mackenzie.

He added, “Good luck to every single runner – whether you’re racing your first 21km or chasing a personal best in the Ultra. Get your running shoes on, and let’s celebrate this International Day of Sport and Peace together!”

The Western Cape Government proudly supports active and healthy lifestyles for all residents and wishes everyone a safe and memorable Two Oceans weekend.
