Cape Town counts down 50 days to Netball World Cup 2023

Friday, 9 June 2023 marks 50 days to go until the first whistle is blown at the Netball World Cup 2023. The Western Cape Government is ready and excited for the whole province to join us as we build up excitement to this event, which will see all matches being played at the CTICC in Cape Town from 28 July – 6 August 2023.

This will be the first time that the tournament will be hosted on African soil and we are ready to welcome teams from across the world to our beautiful city. As part of the build-up to the event, a trophy tour will take place across the Western Cape from 3-7 July 2023. This tour will see the trophy travelling to communities across the province, from the Garden Route, Central Karoo, Overberg, Cape Winelands and the West Coast, until the trophy makes its final stop in Cape Town. We invite communities to come out and support us as we visit them during that week.

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport will also be supporting municipalities in hosting fan zones and viewing centres across the province so that communities will be able to watch matches wherever they are.

Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Anroux Marais said: “In 50 days’ time we will see start of the first match in Cape Town and we are so proud to be hosting this prestigious tournament. I want to call on everyone in the Western Cape to help us build excitement and to show our Proteas team that we are all backing them to keep the trophy in South Africa. We are expecting large numbers of travelling fans, but we would like the people of the Western Cape to bring the unique gees that we have seen in the past. Whether you are attending matches in person, watching at a fan zone or viewing centre or supporting from home, let us bring the energy to help our team across the line!”

The tournament starts on Friday, 28 July and South Africa will play their first match against Wales on that day.
