The International 16 Days of Activism campaign focuses on generating an increased awareness of the negative impact that violence and abuse have on women and children, and the social fabric of our society. The campaign starts on 25 November and ends on 10 December every year.

The Department of Community Safety aims to increase safety for all the people in the Province by promoting professional policing through effective oversight, by ensuring the safety at all public buildings and spaces, to facilitate safety partnerships and programmes and to build greater safety and security organisational resilience.
The Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Reagen Allen hosts a monthly radio show to showcase the departments activities and involvement in the communities of the Western Cape. This platform also allows the public to engage the Minster with their concerns and suggestions in creating a safer province for all.

The function of the Directorate: Community Police Relations (CPR) will shift to assist local governments to realise the outcome of promoting a safe and healthy environment by supporting safety partners through local government structures. It is also envisaged that this will form part of departmental support and collaboration with Community Safety Forums (CSFs). Further to this, the directorate’s support to district municipalities will include the assessment of progress made against the implementation of the district safety plans on a regular basis.
This Directorate is mandated to:
- monitor police conduct;
- assess the effectiveness of visible policing; and
- to oversee the effectiveness and efficiency of the police service.
Objective
The objective is to contribute towards the Promotion of Professional Policing (PPP) through effective oversight in the Province.
The Directorate performs the following functions:
Conducts research on community safety needs and interests in order to:
- inform stakeholders;
- influence the allocation of policing and safety resources; and
- impact on public policy and implementation.
The results of the research are distributed among key stakeholders in government and civil society and many of the reports are available on the Provincial Government website. Click here to see the reports.
This Directorate partners with key role players in the field of safety to focus on the implementation of safety promotion programmes with an emphasis on youth, women and children.
Community engagements are facilitated with community leaders on issues of policing and safety in the Province.
The Directorate supports the following strategic safety partnerships:
- Chrysalis Academy;
- the Youth Work Programme; and
- the Youth Safety and Religion Partnership (YSRP) programme.
