More about Doringbaai
Doringbaai, formerly Doornbaai, is a peaceful fishing village on the West Coast, about 8 kilometers from Strandfontein and 300 kilometers from Cape Town. The North Bay Canning Company built a crayfish packing factory in 1925, which gave birth to the small village. Historically, ships and boats travelling the sea-trade route used the bay as an anchor point. Camels were used to transport goods to Vanrhynsdorp at the time.
Unfortunately, the crayfish factory closed in the 1970s, and the building is now a wine cellar and tasting room for Fryer's Cove Wines.
Today, the lighthouse (built in 1963 and replaced in 1993 due to storm damage) serves as a beacon and anchor for locals and tourists alike.
