A R34.1 m Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) project for the Western Cape Department of Health to build a new forensic pathology laboratory at the Knysna District Hospital is expected to be complete in June 2022. The new laboratory will replace the old facility located at the South African Police Service station which is not suitable for extensions or refurbishments.
By the end of the contract, 20% of the contract value will have been spent on targeted building subcontractors and 5% will go to targeted suppliers and manufacturers. The project will have created a total of 1 020 person-days of work for skilled local labourers, 1 700 for semi-skilled workers, and 4 080 for unskilled workers. Fifteen days of training will be provided to ten labourers from the Knysna area in skills such as bricklaying, carpentry, plumbing and painting.
