Media Release by Daylin Mitchell, Western Cape Minister of Transport and Public Works

Today, I met with senior officials from my Department to evaluate actions I can consider to end the ongoing unrest in the Nyanga area.

Several busses, government vehicles and private vehicles have been set alight and stoned by irate taxi operators since the unrest was reported last week.

I call on those involved to refrain from violent and criminal acts.  There should be no room for criminality or criminals in the taxi industry.

I have called an urgent meeting with leaders of the SA National Taxi Council (SANTACO) tomorrow and will decide my interventions thereafter.

The safety of every transport user is my top priority.

The Western Cape minibus taxi industry has shown that it is able to work together with government and operate a safe and dignified service in a regulated and monitored environment, with performance-based incentives as we have seen with projects such as Red Dot and Blue Dot.

My Department will continue to work tirelessly with representatives of the SAPS and other law enforcement agencies to bring stability in Nyanga and to ensure commuter safety is not compromised.
