On Tuesday, 13 February 2024, Western Cape Provincial Traffic Services seized a significant shipment of drugs and counterfeit clothing in Laingsburg.

Our offices intercepted a heavy motor vehicle carrying 42 bags of compressed dagga weighing two tonnes and with an estimated value of R4 million.

Two arrests were made in relation to this bust, for the possession of an illegal substance and dealing in counterfeit goods.

Results from WC Provincial Traffic Services – 12 to 18 February 2024

Between 12 and 18 February 2024, Provincial Traffic officers conducted 248 integrated roadblocks, vehicle check points and speed control operations; and stopped and checked 27 699 vehicles across the Western Cape. 

A total of 8 180 fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness. Twenty-one vehicles were impounded and 209 were discontinued for being unroadworthy.

A total of 267 speeding offences were recorded, with the following highest speeds:

  • 169km/h in a 120km/h zone
  • 144km/h in a 100km/h zone
  • 119Km/h in an 80km/h zone
  • 99km/h in a 70km/h zone
  • 89km/h in a 60km/h zone

A total of 96 arrests were made for the following offences:

  • 63 x driving under the influence of alcohol
  • 2 x speeding
  • 6 x reckless and negligent driving
  • 5 x goods overloading
  • 8 x possession of fraudulent documentation
  • 1 x dealing in counterfeit goods
  • 1 x failing to furnish information
  • 9 x undocumented persons
  • 1 x possession of illegal substance

A total of 28 crashes and 31 fatalities were recorded, including:

  • 5 x drivers
  • 1 x motorcyclist
  • 9 x passengers
  • 16 x pedestrians
