Tomorrow, Wednesday 14 June 2023, Western Cape Minister of Mobility Ricardo Mackenzie will announce Government’s decision following an investigation where a minibus taxi driver endangered passengers and other road users lives while attempting to escape traffic officials at a routine check point.
The incident – involving a high-speed chase – was captured by a passenger inside the taxi in George on 18 April 2023 and went viral on social media.
The Mobility Department called an inquiry into the matter which allowed both the complainants and the taxi operator to present what transpired on that day. This decisive action supports the Department's commitment to ensure safer roads for commuters and consequences for those putting lives at risk.
Minister Mackenzie will announce the outcomes of the hearing during the media briefing. Details are as follows:
