Media release by the Department of Transport and Public Works
The Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) has had to close the R44 (Clarens Drive) between Gordon’s Bay and Rooi Els after a massive storm this week caused mudslides and rockslides along this road. This section of the R44 is now extremely dangerous. Further storms are expected this weekend and there may be further mudslides and rockslides in the coming days.
Only people who live along this portion of the R44 and people that have bookings at campsites on this road will be permitted to pass. The road is closed to all other traffic – motor vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles, hikers and pedestrians. Any person who ignores the road closure signs and closure barriers faces personal danger and serious legal repercussions. All persons who are permitted to enter the closed section of the R44 are advised to bring enough food, water and other essentials to last several days. This is an important precaution should the upcoming stormy weather make the area even more impassable.
The Department has the necessary authorisations to start repair work once it is safe to do so. DTPW hopes to open at least one lane of this road over the festive season. However, the safety of the travelling public is the most important consideration. This section of the R44 will only be re-opened to traffic when it is safe.
