Provincial Traffic prevents illegal substances from being transported on Western Cape roads
I commend Provincial Traffic Services for their continued efforts to stop Western Cape roads from being used to transport illegal substances.
Over the past weekend, the Traffic Special Ops Team arrested a 40-year-old man for being in possession of 3271 units of abalone on the N2, about 60km outside Caledon.
In a separate incident on the N1 outside Beaufort West, the team arrested two suspects for being in possession of 15 sealed bags of dagga. The men were driving from Mthatha in the Eastern Cape.
Drugs and illegal substances will be seized before they get to our communities and cause harm to our families. There are no exceptions for motorists who display lawlessness and disobey the basic safety principles while on our roads. I am proud of our Provincial Traffic Services for acting without fear or favour and showing zero tolerance towards criminality.
In the week of 29 April to 5 May 2024, Provincial Traffic Services arrested 90 people on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, 10 people for reckless and negligent driving and 8 others for fraudulent documentation.
374 integrated roadblocks were implemented in the week under review, 41 853 vehicles were stopped and checked and a total of 10 222 fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness.
A total of 220 speeding offences were recorded. The highest speeds recorded this week were as follows:
- 178km/h in a 120km/h zone
- 155km/h in a 100km/h zone
- 124Km/h in an 80km/h zone
- 104km/h in a 60km/h zone
- 59km/h in a 40km/h zone
Twenty- Six vehicles were impounded and 163 were discontinued for unroadworthiness.
Arrests
A total of 126 arrests were made for the following offences:
- 90 for driving under the influence of alcohol;
- 3 for speeding;
- 10 for reckless and negligent driving;
- 2 for goods overloading;
- 8 for possession of fraudulent documentation;
- 6 undocumented persons;
- 1 for inducing any authorized officer or peace officer to act in conflict with his/her duty;
- 1 for failing to furnish information;
- 1 for resisting arrest;
- 2 for possession of illegal substance;
- 2 for possession of abalone.
Fatalities recorded between 29 April to 5 May 2024
A total of 19 crashes occurred in the reporting period, and 20 fatalities were recorded:
- 2 drivers;
- 2 motorcyclists;
- 4 passengers;
- 12 pedestrians.
