Notice: Stop gos are in place on Tuesday, 21 March 2023 on Human Rights Day.
The R44 Clarence Drive between km 53.5 (The Grill Shack) and km 56.5 (Steenbras Dam Mountain Pass) will be closed to traffic from 08:00 to 18:00 on weekdays (Mondays to Fridays) and between 08:00 and 15:00 on Saturdays between 7 March and 23 March 2023. Stop gos will be in place during the nights and on Sundays.
The objective of this project is to carry out emergency damage repair to the R44 between the Gordon’s Bay and Rooi Els, between km 53.5 and km 56.5. The emergency works were triggered by heavy rains experienced on 11 and 12 December 2022. The project was awarded to Civils 2000 (Pty) Ltd in 2022 and is scheduled to be completed by 23 April 2023.
After the heavy rains in December 2022, the Western Cape Government implemented emergency repairs to critical damaged sections to allow Clarence Drive to be declared safe for single lane traffic and be partially opened during the holiday period. In order to open Clarence Drive to two-way traffic safely, critical slope stabilisation is required. The nature of the terrain and the size of the specialised equipment required to stabilise the slopes requires the road to be temporarily closed in order to ensure the safety of the road user.
The following road closures and stop-gos will be in effect during this period:
Road closed
Mondays to Fridays, 08:00 to 18:00
Saturdays, 08:00 to 15:00
Stop-gos:
Mondays to Fridays, 18:00 to 08:00
Saturdays, 15:00 to Mondays, 08:00
Road users are requested to use alternative routes during this period. The safety and convenience of the travelling public are of utmost importance and every effort will be made to ensure that courtesy is extended to the public at all times.
The public is requested to be patient during this period and exercise caution when using the road.
