The Department of Transport and Public Works has completed a R45 million project at the 27 Wale Street building which included ground floor modernisation, modernisation of certain kitchens, as well as the upgrading of the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) system on all ten floors.
The Department of Human Settlements (DHS) Walk-In Centre on the ground floor was completely redesigned to cope with an influx of public visitors. Storage cupboards on the ground floor were moved to create more space. The ground floor air inlet had to be moved from the basement to Parking 1. The security area of the ground floor was upgraded. A fire roller shutter was installed in the lift lobby of the ground floor.
The upgrading of the building HVAC system involved remedial fire upgrading in every lobby and goods lift lobby.
Those kitchens that had not previously been modernised were modernised. New distribution boards were installed on all floors.
DHS staff started to move back into the building in October 2021.
