Motor vehicle licence revenue accounted for over 90% of the income the Department of Transport and Public Works generated for itself in the financial year which ended on 31 March 2022. Self-generated income helps to fund the important work that the Department does to serve the residents of the province. This work includes building and maintaining roads, health facilities and schools, subsidising and improving public transport, improving road safety, and running the Expanded Public Works Programme in the Western Cape. Other sources of self-generated departmental income include abnormal load licences, operating licences, special motor vehicle licence numbers, permits for sport gatherings on public roads, course fees, escort fees, rental of office buildings, and fines, penalties and forfeits.
In the 2022/23 financial year, DTPW’s commitments include: completing 19 new education, health and general facilities and a number of major road projects; providing bursaries to 60 young people to study for qualifications in the transport, built environment and engineering fields; creating 550 work opportunities through public works infrastructure projects; conducting 3 937 operations on public roads to curb driving and walking under the influence of alcohol; and enabling 80 emerging contractors to participate in the Contractor Development Programme.
