The Department of Transport and Public Works has started the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) application process for the R300 road construction project.
Guillaume Nel Environmental Consultants (GNEC) has been appointed by BVi Consulting Engineers to facilitate the EIA process in terms of the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) EIA Regulations, 2014 (as amended).
The R300 originates in Weltevreden Valley and is currently a major connecting roadway between the M7 (Jakes Gerwel Drive) and N1. It terminates as a 6-lane dual carriageway near the Old Paarl Road (R101) crossing to the south of the N1 freeway.
To better accommodate current and future traffic volumes, as well as ensure the safety of road users, proposed developments include:
- extending the existing R300 as a 6-lane freeway up to the project extent,
- adding two-lane ramp connections and two-lane termini at the crossing roadway of De Bron Road, Legato Drive and Wellington Road,
- merging the first lane of each ramp connection with the freeway lane and making the second ramp lane an auxiliary lane between interchanges, and
- treating all terminals as conventional signal-controlled terminals with two lanes (left and right turning) at both the on-ramp and off-ramp side.
The proposed development will also require the maintenance of existing stormwater structures, as well as the construction of new stormwater structures and culverts.
The following roadways will be affected during the proposed development:
- N1 freeway (TR9/1),
- De Bron Road (Class 3) via grade separation,
- Legato Drive (aka De Villiers Drive) (Class 2) via grade separation,
- Amadeus Drive (Class 3) with no connecting ramps and a road-over-road structure,
- Langeberg Road (Closure),
- Wellington Road (Class 2) via grade separation.
