The Department of Infrastructure builds and upgrades schools for the Western Cape Education Department.
We consider important aspects when starting these construction projects including job creation through the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) and the inclusion of environmentally-friendly features.
Below are education facilities currently under construction. We also feature recently completed schools.
De Waalville Primary School
The Western Cape Department of Infrastructure (DOI) completed construction of Heidelberg’s R74m De Waalville Primary School in October 2023 and handed the facility over to the Western Cape Education Department (WCED). The new school is able to accommodate up to 1 240 learners.

Perivale Primary School
This is a replacement school which adds an extra 520 places for learners, for a total capacity of 1 240. It is a substantial improvement in functionality and safety over the old buildings.

Klapmuts Schools
Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) has completed a R34m project to build a new Klapmuts Primary School and a new Klapmuts High School on one erf using mobile classrooms.

Moorreesburg High School
This R65.7m project to provide a much-needed school in the region commenced on 8 January 2021 and provided 152 local labour opportunities, 120 for youth, 31 for women, three for people with disabilities, as well as a six-month on-site mentorship programme for six National Youth Service learner artisans.

Bothasig High School
The project aimed to meet the need for additional space for learners identified by the management of the Metro North Education District.

Muizenberg High School
The project is expected to be complete in May 2022. The project aimed to improve the school’s appearance and create a physical environment that is conducive to teachers wanting to teach and learners wanting to learn.

Fisantekraal Primary School
The Department of Transport and Public Works has completed a R6.7m project to add eight additional mobile classrooms and ablutions at the Fisantekraal Primary school.

Mfuleni Mobile High School
The new Mfuleni Mobile High School, which was completed on 15 September 2021 at an estimated cost of R26m, created 21 short-term Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) employment and skills training opportunities.

Sunridge Circle Mobile High School
The new Sunridge Circle Mobile High School in Table View, built at an estimated cost of R18m, created 15 EPWP employment and skills training opportunities.

Seven Steps Academy

Blackheath Primary School
The original school complex comprised of a fast-track concrete frame with lightweight infill panels which had reached an unsafe, unrepairable state.

Crestway High School
Teachers and learners are already enjoying the facilities at the new Crestway High School in Retreat, with Phase 2 of the project reaching practical completion in September 2020.

Beauvallon Secondary School
Key works included repairs to ablutions, ceilings and stormwater systems, roof replacements, external painting, and the unblocking of sewerage systems. Dilapidated buildings were also demolished.

Philippi High School

Nolungile Primary School
It is well understood that it is more cost-effective to undertake preventative maintenance in good time than to undertake repairs at a later stage.

This project will provide much-needed relief to the existing school, and accommodate more pupils in a safe environment condusive to teaching and learning.

Willows Primary School
The Department of Transport and Public Works started this R62 million project in June 2018

Knysna High School Hostel
This R15 million project is expected to reach completion in 2020, if everything goes according to plan.

Kraaifontein High School
The school incorporates “water-wise” features such as borehole facilities and a tank farm, water-wise sanitary fittings, and a water restrictor on the water main line.

Barkly House Pre-Primary School
The project is a conversion project that saw the former Newlands Clinic converted to a fully functional pre-primary school for the learners of Barkly House Pre-Primary School which had previously been accommodated in an old prefabricated structure.

Louwville High School
Most of the school buildings comprise a framed concrete structure and a mixture of face brick and painted infill walls.

Bonnievale Primary School

Cheré Botha LSEN (Learners with Special Educative Needs) School
After being taught in temporary facilities in Stikland for several years whilst construction was under way, learners were delighted to finally move into their new school in January 2018.

Umyezo Wama Apile High School
The construction of the new R68 million Umyezo Wama Apile High School in Grabouw has resumed after a number of disruptions were resolved in consultation with the project steering committee that was nominated by the local community.

Rheenendal Primary School
Excited learners who moved into the new Rheenendal Primary School near Knysna this month are looking forward to the completion of the sports field in August.

Pineview Primary School
Phase 2 of the project which includes the school hall, media centre, computer classroom, and media and handwork rooms, and sport fields – is currently under way and is scheduled to be completed in October 2016.

Worcester High School

Kwanokuthula Primary School
This brand new R40 million school boasts a new hall, four specialist classrooms, a multimedia room, and sports fields.

Kranshoek Primary School
This R35 million school has two Grade R, ten foundation phase, ten intermediate phase, and eight senior phase classrooms, as well as a brand new school hall and sports fields.

Wesfleur Primary School
Certain structures at this school were demolished and replaced at a cost of of R33 million.

Vooruitsig Primary School
The new school accommodates 1 250 learners, including 60 Grade R learners who have been using temporary classrooms on the site.

Zwelethemba Secondary School
Teaching facilities comprise 33 standard classrooms, five specialist rooms and one multi-media room with a library.
Parkview Primary School
Construction was completed in October 2015. New facilities include four Grade R classrooms with enclosed playing areas and facilities.
