Kensington Treatment Centre - Inpatient
The Kensington Treatment Centre is a female only, inpatient rehabilitation
facility based in Maitland.
What are some of the risks of using unregistered inpatient facilities?
- Abuse of human rights such as assault, starvation etc.;
- Non-compliance with rules and regulations eg. emergency medical and mental health care services should be available to service users 24 hours a day, 7 days a week;
- Non-scientific approach that is not evidence-based;
- Lack of professional and qualified staff;
- Mismatch between fees and services;
- No accountability of the centre or recourse for the family.
What are the substance abuse trends that you have observed at your facility?
Within the Western Cape, crystal methamphetamine (tik) still has the highest prevalence among youth, with heroin use increasing. In the Boland area, alcohol use is quite high.
What are some of the warning signs that treatment is not being used in the way it was intended?
- When there is no positive behavioural change;
- The person displays general dishonesty and secrecy;
- There is an avoidance of the family/support structures;
- The person may return to previous negative influences.
What are some of the pitfalls of making use of the wrong treatment options?
- An increase of drug or alcohol usage;
- Treatment is rendered ineffective;
- Inpatient treatment can place undue financial stress on families;
- Effects can range from discomfort, and extreme cases, even death.
Can you share a possible “formula” that worked for users?
The formula to recovery is to apply the treatment programme to your life. There is no one particular formula but what we believe that Abstinence + Change = Recovery.
