WCLG/HSF Seasonal School for Councillors focuses on Consequence Management

3 September 2024

This Seasonal school was hosted by the Western Cape Local Government (WCLG) in collaboration with the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF), and the Stellenbosch University. On the 2nd and 3rd of September 2024, councillors from all Municipalities in the Central Karoo District gathered at Matoppo Inn, Beaufort West, for the Seasonal School targeted at Councillors.

This year’s program, titled “Consequence Management Capacity Building Program for Councillors,” was designed to equip local government leaders with the essential skills and knowledge needed to enforce accountability and foster a culture of responsibility within their respective municipalities.

This program brought together seasoned experts and practitioners who shared valuable insights and practical strategies on effective consequence management.

Through a series of interactive sessions and workshops, councillors were able to deepen their understanding of how to handle breaches of conduct, ensure compliance with regulations, and ultimately enhance the performance and integrity of local government.

The event was more than just a learning experience, it was a pivotal moment for councillors to network, share challenges, and collectively envision a future where consequence management is not just a policy, but a cornerstone of good governance.

The Executive Mayor of Beaufort West Mr. Josias De Kock Reynolds, who extended a word of welcome to all councillors, also indicated his support for the programmed, and noted its benefit to councillors.  The mayor said, “This training is an invaluable opportunity for our councillors to strengthen their leadership skills and reinforce the principles of good governance. By investing in their capacity to manage consequences effectively, “we are building a more resilient and accountable local government for our community.” He said.

Ms. Zanele Mtyoko, the Deputy Director training coordination within the Department of Local Government, emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, “Effective consequence management is the backbone of transparent and accountable governance. “This program is crucial in empowering our councillors to not only identify and address issues promptly but also to create a culture where ethical leadership is the norm” she said.
