In terms of the National Road Traffic Act, anyone manufacturing or selling licence plates must be registered.

You apply to be a registered licence plate manufacturer by completing form MNP and submitting it to the Department of Transport and Public Works' Transport Administration and Licensing directorate.

The application must be accompanied by:

  • Acceptable identification of the applicant (certified copy of ID or copy of business registration with the Registrar of Companies) and that of its proxy and/or representative.
  • A copy of the certification mark permit issued by the SABS to the applicant (if available).
  • The appropriate fees.

Payment can be made electronically or you can include a cheque with your application.

Cheques should be made payable to the Department of Transport and Public Works and posted to the Transport Administration and Licensing directorate.

Proof of payment can be faxed to the Transport Administration and Licensing directorate at 021 483 2357 and included in your posted application.
