The deadline to update prepaid electricity meters before they stop working is now just 100 days away. South Africa’s current pre-paid electricity meter software which generates unique re- charge codes is due to expire on 24 November 2024.
“I can confirm that the Western Cape has now reset approximately 95.9% of all meters within municipal supply areas, with the national average currently sitting at 75.8%. I am also pleased to report that the municipalities of Bergrivier, Cape Agulhas, Cederberg and Drakenstein have all reported a 100% completed reset.
Municipalities in the Western Cape are updating at a much higher rate compared to their counterparts in the rest of the country. But in the coming weeks, I will be visiting those municipalities that are lagging in the province to ensure that we get all pre-paid meter users over the line and every municipality to a complete reset," said Minister Baartman.
Provincial Treasury has been in continuous engagement with municipalities to ensure that the province reaches its target of a 100% reset. It is crucial that meters are updated before the deadline, or residents will not be able to recharge with new tokens and they will lose their power supply.
The pre-paid meter update process requires a manual ‘reset’ code which must be entered into the pre-paid meter in the same way as normal recharge codes. If not done, residents will not be able to load electricity.
“We do not want our residents to wake up on 25 November and sit in the dark. I urge municipalities to ensure that residents and businesses in their communities are adequately informed on the pre- paid meter update process,” said Minister Baartman.
Provincial Treasury has also produced a list of relevant municipal officials that residents can contact should they have any queries about the process or if they are unsure whether their pre- paid meter has been reset. The contact details can be accessed here.
