Water Quality Testing Events: Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain

18 March 2007
As part of the Cape Town Water Week and Sanitation Week programme, two Water Quality Testing events have been planned for tomorrow (20 March).

The first will be held at Vusulela Primary School Hall, from 10:00 to 12:00, and the second at Portlands Community Hall/Nursery School from 14:00 to 16:00. All media are invited to attend either one as the focus for each will be the same.

These events are integrated and collaborative events between the Water, Scientific and Health departments within the City of Cape Town and will focus on the process used when taking samples for water quality testing across the City.

The objective will be to demonstrate, highlight and reinforce the excellent quality of potable (drinking) water the City provides to all consumers.

Samples will be taken from the surrounding area and testing will be done on site. The audience will then have the opportunity to see exactly how a sample is taken on site.

Cape Town's drinking water is safest and cleanest to drink from your own home tap. A total of 166 220 physical, microbiological and chemical analysis are tested every year from the final treatment bulk supply water and distribution system.

"The water treatment process, supply and testing is measured through ISO 9001/2000 and SABS inter-laboratory comparison accreditation systems. The City has consistently attained first position with laboratory performed analysis", says Sipho Mosai; Director Water and Sanitation.

"We have bottled our water from the tap to show the public that tap water is still the purest and cleanest to drink," says Mpharu Hloyi: Manager Scientific Services.

Other topics presented at the event will be waterborne diseases and personal hygiene, as well as the link between water and sanitation.
