Provincial traffic officers were deployed to areas that have been affected by strong winds to help redirect traffic and offer assistance to motorists and road users.
Officers are monitoring the situation at the Huguenot Tunnel, where four trucks overturned between 17:30 and 18:00 yesterday due to strong winds. No one was injured during the incidents which occurred on the bridge near the N1 Toll Plaza.
The tunnel has since been closed and will reopen once it’s deemed safe for motorists.
Kenny Africa, the Provincial Traffic Chief, says the winds must first subside in order for traffic and emergency services to assist the trucks, which have not been removed.
“The situation is currently unchanged. Motorists will have to use alternative routes, including the old Du Toitskloof Pass,” he said.
The Bainskloof Pass is also closed after winds uprooted trees which were strewn across the road. Traffic officers are on scene and redirecting the flow of traffic.
The Pass is expected to reopen during the course of today.
The safety of road users is currently the highest priority.
