Stadium Tender to Appear Before City Tender Committee

11 March 2007

The tender award for the new multi-purpose Green Point stadium will be considered by the City of Cape Town's Bid Adjudication Committee (BAC) at 14:00 - Tuesday 13 March 2007 - at the Civic Centre. The full report for the BAC is being finalised today following the need to align budgetary figures in supporting documentation.

Council approved the budget for the stadium last week. The stadium on Green Point Common is to be used as a semi-final match venue for the 2010 World Cup.

Up until now, the City has been negotiating with a joint venture of Murray & Roberts and WBHO (Pty) Ltd, who had been declared as a "preferred bidder" by the Bid Adjudication Committee. The tender could not be awarded at the time as the initial project cost had exceeded the available budget. The Municipal Finance Management Act stipulates that a project must be fully funded before a tender award can be made.

Savings on the project cost plus additional contributions had brought the project within budget which led to formal Council approval. The budget is R2,85 billion.

Preparatory site work is expected to start within a week and the stadium is due for completion at the end of 2009.
