The Department of Transport and Public Works has started to reseal the sections along the R27 and R363 between Vredendal and Koekenaap. The 33 km road project, valued at R32 million, is scheduled for completion in mid-2016.
The road, which was last refurbished in 1996, is estimated to carry up to 1 200 vehicles a day. The project will include the repairs, strengthening and widening of roads, as well as the replacement of bridge joints on the Olifantsrivier Bridge.
The flow of traffic during construction works will be managed with a stop/go system during the day and a traffic light system at night.
Motorists can expect weather-related delays.
A significant number of employment opportunities (quantified as 12 000 person-days), will be created for people living in the Matzikama Municipality. A total of 5% of the contract value will be allocated to contractor businesses in the Western Cape.
