Operation Reclaim arrests 246 Motorists for Unpaid Traffic Fines

7 October 2009
Cape Town Traffic Services reclaim unit, last week targeted Athlone, Bellville, Pinelands, Mitchells Plain, Philippi and Milnerton. Two hundred and forty-six motorists were arrested on 633 warrants of arrest for unpaid traffic fines valued at R502 300-00.

A further 206 warrants in the form of indemnities to the value of R211 880-00 were issued to the owners of taxis and private vehicles that had either been warned or had their vehicles confiscated at road blocks. Indemnities afford the owners the opportunity to pay their outstanding fines and warrants at the respective courts in the areas where the offences occurred.

Traffic Officers spent 40 hours conducting intensive road blocks as well as door to door house visits and at places of work. The strategy adopted by Traffic Services has proved to be very effective in apprehending these offenders.

"We urge motorists to comply with the law and pay their fines within the stipulated period or face the embarrassment of being arrested in the presence of family members or peers", says Chief Inspector Merle Lourens, media spokesperson for Cape Town Traffic Services.
