On 13 and 14 March 2015, 26 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 2 548 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services safety campaign. Fifteen people, eight of whom were pedestrians, died on the province’s roads.
A total of 1 127 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 19 arrests.
The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Brackenfell at 1.34 mg/1 000 ml, which was five times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.
A total of 608 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 29 speeding offences were recorded.
A total of 263 fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R 330 650.
