Mfuleni Residents Celebrate Mfuleni Community Park Project

17 August 2005
Work will commence soon on a R5 million Community Park in Mfuleni that will not only provide a much needed recreation facility but also aid job creation.

The project is the result of a partnership between the City of Cape Town, MaAfrika Tikkun, the Department of Water Affairs & Forestry (DWAF) and the Mfuleni community.

Councillor Tozama Nomsa Mlanjeni will officiate at the sod turning ceremony on the site of the new park on 19th August 2005, 10am: Mfuleni Community Park, Trevor Tokwana Street, Mfuleni.

At the same time, a partnership agreement will be signed between the Mfuleni Community Park Project and the already established Nelson Mandela Peace Park Project in Delft.

Councillor Mlanjeni said: "This initiative forms part of the City's poverty alleviation programme. The envisioned park will empower the community with education, skills creation, conservation awareness and recreation. In this way social and economic skills can be developed while environmental awareness is encouraged. The Mfuleni Community Park will create a sense of pride and have a significant impact on the quality of life of Mfuleni residents".

In 1997 the City of Cape Town, MaAfrika Tikkun and DWAF formed a partnership and developed the Nelson Mandela Peace Park in Delft. This was a pilot project aimed at uplifting communities through four avenues, namely: job creation, poverty alleviation, education and recreation. During 2003 this successful partnership was extended to the Mfuleni community as this park was judged to be the most suitable site for the continuation of the partnership. The total capital cost of the project is estimated at R5 million over a four year period.

A competition has been devised with the aim of finding the most suitable name for the park which is currently known as the Mfuleni Community Park. The park will host a community centre, a youth centre, recreation hall as well as a crèche. A sport field and play park is already in place. Some of the residents around the park are already employed on an informal tender basis to do the maintenance of the park.
