Maccassar Dunes Nature Reserve to Host Heritage Week Programme

14 September 2009
A Heritage Week programme will be hosted by Macassar Dunes Nature Reserve and its partners at the reserve from Tuesday 22 to Thursday 24 September 2009.

Around 200 primary school learners from Khayelitsha and Macassar, particularly those closest to the reserve, will visit the reserve on 22 and 23 September for various activities and lessons.

The learners will be taken on a short hike from the Macassar Waste Water Treatment Works, past the Eerste River, through the protected Milkwood Forest and the dunes, learning as they go about our valuable natural heritage and the negative effects of illegal activities on our environment.

An open day for 60 individuals from three different communities surrounding the nature reserve will take place on 24 September. This will focus on cultural heritage and will include activities and talks by City of Cape Town Nature Conservation staff members, community partners and volunteers.

The main aims of the programme are to inform and share knowledge with the surrounding communities about the significance of their natural resources and heritage, and to strengthen the partnership between the nature reserve and surrounding communities.

Participating organisations include Cape Flats Nature, Mitchells Plain Tourism Forum and the Macassar Dunes Co-Management Association.

Members of the media are welcome to join us at this event and become a communication partner in this important development project.
