Interim Parking Management System for Bellville CBD

18 May 2006
The City of Cape Town has appointed Numque 20 to manage the kerbside parking in the Bellville Central Business District (CBD) on an interim basis until a permanent contractor has been appointed.

The previous contract with Numque 20 was formally discontinued on 26 April 2006, following a High Court judgement setting aside its contract with the City.

Numque 20 was appointed on 2 May 2006 on a month-to-month basis to manage kerbside parking in the Cape Town CBD and Sea Point, whilst Street Parking Solutions was appointed in Claremont.

"We have received several complaints that the traffic flow and parking situation in the Bellville CBD was deteriorating. A kerbside parking management system promotes a regular turnover of parking bays, which is necessary to stimulate commercial activity," says Cllr Elizabeth Thompson, Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Roads and Stormwater.

"After closely monitoring the situation in the Bellville CBD we realised that exceptional circumstances had developed which needed urgent attention. Against this background the Acting City Manager approved the extension of Numque 20's interim contract to also cover the Bellville CBD," she says.

Numque 20 has already deployed its parking marshals in the area.

The invitation to tender for the provision of a city-wide parking management system has already been advertised. Once a permanent contractor has been appointed, the present interim arrangements will be discontinued.
