On 13 and 14 February 2015, 24 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 2 393 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services safety campaign. Ten people, five of whom are pedestrians, died on the province’s roads.
A total of 1 384 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 15 arrests.
The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Caledon at 1.12 mg/1 000 ml, which was four times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.
A total of 5 041 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 602 speeding offences were recorded. Two hundred and fourteen (214) fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R 246 800.
