City's Annual Free "Concerts In The Park" Underway

18 October 2005
The City of Cape Town's Arts and Culture Department within the Social Development Directorate annually hosts a series of free "Concerts in the Park". The aim of the concerts is to encourage communities to reclaim these open spaces in a positive way.

A family picnic with artists, crafters and support from the local community culminates in an afternoon of family fun and entertainment. The City's Come and Play team and the Jungle Theatre Company will also entertain the kids.

Artists are identified from each community and a series of workshops are held with them covering topics such as technical specifications and performance and stage related theory. This is an ideal opportunity for young local artists to entertain their own community and showcase their budding talents.

Crafters and informal traders are afforded the opportunity to sell their wares. In this way, interim jobs are created with the long term aim being poverty alleviation.

The second of seven free community "Concerts in the Park" will be hosted in the Strand.

Date: Sunday, 23 October 2005
Time: 12:00 until 18:00
Venue: Gustro Sports Field, Gustro, Strand

Young talent from the Helderberg Area as well as upcoming community artists will be showcased on the day. For the more mature members of the audience, The Rockets and legendary guitarist Allou April will provide entertainment for the rest of the afternoon.

Bring your picnic baskets and the entire family for an afternoon of community building!
