City Staff Commits to Save Electricity

2 May 2006
Mayor Helen Zille Wednesday, 03 May 2006, officially launched the City's Energy-Saving Lamp Exchange Programme for staff.

One of the targets for this campaign is that 30% of all households will be using energy-saving light bulbs or CFLs (Compact Fluorescent Lamps) by 2010. Many residents may not know this, but by saving electricity we are also saving water, because power stations use two litres of water for every unit of electricity generated.

As part of a broader energy efficiency campaign, the City of Cape Town in partnership with Eskom has initiated an Energy-Saving Lamp Exchange Programme, whereby all council staff can exchange their incandescent globes (from home) for new energy-saving CFLs. Eskom has supplied the City with 50 000 CFLs.

Over the past three years pilot initiatives have been successfully executed to reduce the City of Cape Town's electricity consumption. The City has carried out energy audits at municipal buildings in Parow, Bellville and at the Civic Centre. Parow and Bellville have been retrofitted with energy-efficient devices, with the Civic Centre still to be done. Education and awareness campaigns around energy efficiency were undertaken with staff in these buildings and these measures have seen savings of up to 25%.
