Wayne Aldridge, Acting Head of the DPU, said the arrests were the result of public vigilance and the willingness of local residents to bring matters of concern to the attention of the Metro Police.
"There has been an increase in crime in the area since an informal dwelling was set up on the rocks at Bantry Bay. The 12 people being detained at the Sea Point Police Station were arrested in terms of the By-law relating to Streets, Public Places and the Prevention of Noise Nuisances" said Aldridge.
"We encourage the public to keep us informed by contacting the Specialised Law Enforcement Services toll free number 0800 225 669. Anyone in the Bantry Bay area who has been the victim of theft is urged to contact the Sea Point Police Station," said Neil Arendse, spokesman for the Special Services Department.
