City Celebrates Library Week

18 March 2007
A host of interesting programmes and events will be incorporated into SA Library Week 2007, which will be celebrated at all public library facilities within the City of Cape Town from 19-24 March 2007.

Libraries will once again be presenting a variety of programmes, ranging from storytelling sessions, library orientation sessions to awareness sessions on Tik and other drugs. There will even be a "Library Fugitive" in Bellville Library. Anyone who spots him/her will win a prize.

This year's theme is "Libraries: Your Key to the Future," as chosen by the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA).

As is the case in the Western Cape, where there are more than 300 libraries (Cape Town has more than 100) the Provincial Library Services has its own theme, aligned to the LIASA theme, which this year reads: "Your Stars say Read".

Library bags and bookmarks will also be handed out to library users during this time.

SA Library Week also brings with it the annual amnesty period, i.e. Fine Free Week. Any overdue library material returned to libraries during this week will not be liable for a fine - and no questions will be asked.

As part of the broader theme this year, the Library and Information Services Department will be conducting a User Survey in all branches, in an effort to find out more about what users want from its services. The survey will start during SA Library Week and continue until the end of March. A non-user survey will also be conducted.
