City Of Cape Town Promotes Environmental Related Careers

The City of Cape Town, in partnership with SABC Education and Orbes Media will host the SABC Education Careers Faire at the Good Hope Centre from 24 to 26 May 2005, to showcase their commitment to the environment and youth. Councillor Gawa Samuels, Deputy Executive Mayor of Cape Town, will officially open the faire.

Councillor Samuels said: "Education is the best financial investment you can make. Education for sustainable development of our youth is an investment in our future and has a life-long relevance. It can lift people out of poverty and provide the means for them to participate fully in their communities".

Danie Swart, Marketing Manager at SABC Education said: "Throughout the faire, the City of Cape Town's Environmental Centre will promote environmental-related careers to grade 11 and 12 learners. The City wants to empower the youth to become actively involved in their communities to create an understanding of crucial environmental issues".

The City's environmental policy ensures that the environment is managed in a way that the people of Cape Town can draw the benefits whilst ensuring survival for future generations. The policy touches on all aspects of service delivery.

"So far 126 950 learners and 4 705 educators from 695 schools have passed through the faire gates. After Cape Town the faire heads for Polokwane Showgrounds from 31 May to 2 June then the Tabernacle in Kimberley from 2 to 4 August and last stop for 2005 is the Witbank Cultural Centre from 16 to 18 August" concludes Swart.

Each faire hosts separate expos and seminars for teachers and learners. The teacher's conference will take place on the first day of each faire allowing exhibitors communication time with teachers, who in turn become familiar with the variety of careers available.

Individuals with parents, home-based teachers, special needs learners, career guidance officers, government departments and other role players have been encouraged to attend the faire on the first day.
