City to assist Grand Parade Informal Traders during 2010

Along with the Green Point Stadium, the Grand Parade will be the major centre of activity with more than 25 000 people expected to gather there for the "Fan Fest' party. R20 million is being spent on upgrading the area where a giant, high-definition TV screen will broadcast the matches and entertainment will be provided from ten in the morning until midnight.

Those who are unable to visit the stadium or afford tickets will, at no cost, be able to view all 64 matches in this safe and secure fenced area. To facilitate the preparation of the Fan Fest Park on the Grand Parade, it will be necessary to close this area to all normal activities from 01 May to 18 July 2010.

It is also very probable that the City may require use of the Grand Parade for a test event early next year to prepare for the Fan Fest.

The City, mindful and appreciative of the informal trading market that currently operates on the Grand Parade, is working very hard to ensure that there will be alternative informal trading opportunities during the Football World Cup and preference will be given to those who regularly trade at the Grand Parade.

"The City would like to stress that its Informal Trading Legacy is one of the key aspects of 2010, as is the creation of more public markets and opportunities for the traders," said Alderman Felicity Purchase, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Development and Tourism. "These processes are well in hand and the traders have been and will be consulted throughout this planning stage," she said.
