City and Provincial Department of Social Services Launch Phakama Brick-Making Plant In Khayelitsha

13 October 2005
The City of Cape Town in partnership with the Provincial Department of Social Services officially launched the Phakama Brick-Making Plant in Khayelitsha today 14 October 2005, as part of the City's Khayelitsha Poverty Reduction Programme (KPRP).

A three-year KPRP partnership agreement between the City, the Provincial Department of Social Services and Poverty Alleviation and the Khayelitsha Development Trust was signed on 24 March 2005.

Executive Mayor, Alderman Nomaindia Mfeketo, said: "The challenge now is to transform this brick-making plant into an income generating initiative. The City will continue to support any initiative aimed at providing employment that will enhance the quality of life of our people in the communities".

The City of Cape Town made available a site for the brick-making plant. Phakama Brick-Making Plant will pay a minimal fee of R150-00 per annum for leasing this land. This is far below the market value of the site.

The Provincial Department of Social Services funded an amount of R984 433.00 as part of the agreement signed in March.
