Cape Town Traffic Service Intensifies Road Safety Stratgies

11 October 2009
Cape Town Traffic Services held road blocks across the city over the weekend as part of the Department's ongoing enforcement strategies aimed at reducing the amount of accidents and incidents on our roads.

In a joint operation between the Taxi Unit, Road Haulage, Bellville General Enforcement and the Warrants Section, 21 unroadworthy taxis were confiscated. Sixty motorists were arrested on 130 warrants of arrest for unpaid traffic fines to the value of R99 800.00.

Traffic Services makes use of number plate recognition technology to identify vehicles with outstanding warrants of arrest.

"Reacting to complaints of illegal drag racing in Sea Point, Clifton and Camps Bay, traffic officers arrested one person for being in possession of a stolen motor vehicle. A further 105 other traffic-related offences were also recorded," says Chief Inspector Merle Lourens, media spokesperson for Cape Town Traffic Services.

In a vehicle check point held in Langa, traffic officers issued 56 fines for various offences.
