Cape Flats Rugby Club Turns 100

25 October 2006
One of the oldest rugby clubs on the Cape Flats celebrates its Centenary tomorrow with a gala reception hosted by Deputy Mayor Andrew Arnolds.

The Progress Rugby Football Club, based in Crawford, has over 120 members from Athlone, Mitchells Plain, Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, Langa and Lotus River.

It was started in 1906 by men who had left the mission stations in Elim, Genadendal and Mamre, in search of employment in Cape Town.

Life president, Andrew Talliard, has been a member of the club for 51 years.

At the anniversary celebration, tributes will be paid by Deputy Mayor Arnolds, as well as Abel Appel, grandson of one of the founders, Ephraim Appel.
