60 Deserving Students Get City of Cape Town Bursaries

12 March 2007
The City of Cape Town is to award bursaries totalling R1,2m to 60 local students for the 2007 academic year.

This forms part of the City's annual bursary scheme which focuses on areas in which the municipality is experiencing acute skills shortages.

This year over 1745 applications were received from needy students across all sectors. Successful applicants were selected from 39 fields of study, with a major focus on technical and project management skills, in preparation for 2010.

The majority of the beneficiaries are Black women from across the city. The youngest beneficiary is a 16 year old mechanical engineering student and the eldest, a 44 year old masters student in urban design.

In addition to the 60 new bursaries, the City has 76 current external bursars from previous years. The external bursary scheme complements the City's internal scheme for employees.

Executive Mayor Helen Zille will be the guest speaker at a ceremony to hand over the bursaries. Other speakers include Dave Beretti, Executive Director: Corporate Services; Sihle Msengana, Director: Human Resource Development; and Eugene Kotzé, Principal Training Practitioner.
