Our Safely Home Programme focuses on road safety for all road users. Our former Minister for Transport and Public Works, Robin Carlisle, initiated the program. It aims to reduce the number of people killed on the province's roads. Safely Home was initiated in 2009. By 2020, road deaths in the Western Cape dropped from 29.25 to 15.82 per 100,000. This is a reduction of 46%.

The World Health “World Report on Road Traffic Injury” speaks about 6 recommendations. Countries should follow these to improve their road safety records and save lives.

The Western Cape Government appointed the Western Cape Mobility Department to implement the Safely Home Programme based on these recommendations.

Safely Home is based on the four E's of road safety. The United Nations recognises them as international best practice.

  • Enforcement
  • Education
  • Engineering
  • Evaluation

Safely Home recognises that South Africa and Western Cape in particular have some of the world's most dangerous roads. The program works to fulfill the UN's Sustainable Development Goals by reducing road carnage.
